This note explains how the classification of your loan account changes if an instalment is not paid on time, as required by the Reserve Bank of India.
1. Due date and overdue
The due date is the date on which your instalment (EMI) must be paid, as shown in your KFS and repayment schedule. If the full amount due is not received before Komac runs its day-end process on the due date, your account becomes overdue from that date.
2. Special Mention Account (SMA) and Non-Performing Asset (NPA)
| Classification | When the account is classified |
|---|---|
| SMA-0 | Any amount overdue for up to 30 days |
| SMA-1 | Amount overdue for more than 30 days and up to 60 days |
| SMA-2 | Amount overdue for more than 60 days and up to 90 days |
| NPA (Non-Performing Asset) | Amount overdue for more than 90 days |
The classification is done for each borrower as part of the day-end process on the relevant date, and is reported to the Credit Information Companies (credit bureaus).
3. Example
Your EMI is due on 5 March 2026 and is not paid by the day-end process on that date. Your account is overdue from 5 March 2026 (SMA-0). If it remains continuously overdue:
| Date (day-end process) | Classification |
|---|---|
| 5 March 2026 | SMA-0 (overdue) |
| 4 April 2026 (30 days overdue) | SMA-1 |
| 4 May 2026 (60 days overdue) | SMA-2 |
| 3 June 2026 (90 days overdue) | NPA |
4. Upgradation
An account classified as NPA is upgraded to “standard” only when the entire arrears of interest and principal are paid. Paying only part of the overdue amount does not change the classification. For example, if your account became an NPA on 3 June 2026 and you pay all the overdue amounts on 20 June 2026, it will be upgraded to standard on 20 June 2026.
5. Why this matters
Overdue, SMA and NPA status is reported to credit bureaus and can affect your credit score and future borrowing. Paying your instalments on or before the due date keeps your account regular. If you are facing difficulty in repaying, please contact us early at compliance@kifpl.com or 022-4825 1858.
